Yearly Summary

This flashback will update you on my activities of the last 12 months.

About the Kids:

Angela is now 3 ½ years old. She is a good girl. She is obedient, peace-loving and calm. She goes to kindergarten, takes music classes and on weekends she paints with her Dad. She is not talented in sports, but nevertheless she finds gymnastics entertaining. Slowly she is turning into a girl: she does not use a pacifier anymore, she doesn't take a lunch nap anymore and goes to the bathroom by herself. If she is in good spirits she can -- only if she so desires -- eat by herself and dress herself. That is something very welcome since it means less work for me. Her hobbies include painting, jigsaw puzzles and looking at kids books -- all very calm activities.

Aitor is now nearly 1 ½ years old. He is a thunderstorm; I call him "Shiva the Destroyer". Aitor frequently has naughty thoughts on his mind. His favorite activities are to turn the oven, stove, washing machine on, tear things of the table, smash pots around and to tear up books with his teeth. Since he is such an energetic child he has to be watched every second. To compensate for his mischievous acts he has a smile that makes one forgive him. He is also very curious and if you show him something new he pays full attention to you. He runs around the flat like crazy and needs a lot of space to let go of his energy. Seems like one day he will be mountaineer: He must climb anything that crosses his path: chairs, tables, ladders and when he spots a stair he is madly determined to walk up the stair, but not once, at least twice, 3 times, 4 times, ... In fall 2007 he will start kindergarten. Let's see if they are capable of dominating him. His hobbies are running around, "climbing" and making noise.

About Traveling:

With two kids it is not so easy to travel spontaneously. Our excursions can be counted with the fingers of one hand.

Easter we spent in Guardamar del Seguro, a small town on the coast in the south of Spain. It was too cold to swim in April, but the kids can enjoy playing on the beach and building sand castles. Inma always loves to get away for awhile and everyone in the family gets pleasure out of the walks in the wet sand on the beaches.

In summer we went back to Austria to visit family.

Another short vacation we passed in Les Landes on the French coast. This is already our second stay there. We liked it so much last year that we came back again. For a week the whole family lived in a tent. It was hot, nearly too hot for the beaches. Our daily lunch picnics in the shady and quiet pine tree forests were always a delight. Nature is beautiful around here and live is peaceful. The highlight for Angela was the visit to a farm for kids where she could give the milk bottle to baby goats and bambis.

We did several day trips to local beaches and one of the state parks not so far from home.

In December my brother Franz and I went to Argentina to spend time in the mountains. We climbed Aconcagua, the highest mountain outside Asia.Despite its 6962m (some 22,800ft) it is technically an easy mountain. Its difficulties lie in the weather and the logistics. It took as 15 days, 5 days just for the descend. The two of us had 90kg (200lbs) of stuff (55lbs of food, 10lbs of cooking gas, 135lbs of equipment like tent, sleeping bags, etc.). Round-trip we hiked 40 miles. Thankfully mules carry our load for the biggest part of the journey. Starting at the base camp we had to carry the luggage ourselves. Since nobody can carry 100lbs up a mountain, you have to just do it by going 2 or 3 times. Slowly we and our equipment moved from camp to camp up the mountain. We had a lot of luck with the weather. After weeks of heavy storms the period of good weather started just as we were ready to make the first attempt on the summit. On a day with sunshine we were successful on our first summit push. We spent 3 weeks in the mountains and did a total of 40,000 ft of ascent.

Work brought me to Portugal and Dubai (United Arab Emirates). As always I combined the work trips with some tourism. In Dubai I indulged in a lot of delicious food, mostly Indian. At night I went to the beach to play with the waves. The ocean water temperature is an unbelievable 86 degrees F. At daytime with more than 105F I can't survive for more than one hour at the beach. But at night it is a luxurious joy.

About Work:

I continue to be self-employed and my last assignment was a 2-month job in Dubai.

Jahresrückblick

Mein letzter Jahresrückblick ist wieder einmal ein Jahr her.

Über den Nachwuchs:

Angela ist jetzt 3 ½ Jahre alt. Sie ist ein braves Mädchen; im Normalfall ist sie gehorsam, friedlich und ruhig. Sie geht in den Kindergarten, nimmt Musikstunden und am Wochenende bastelt und malt sie gerne mit Papa. Sportlich ist sie zwar eher untalentiert, aber zumindest macht ihr Gymnastik Spaß. Langsam wird sie ein kleines Mädchen: sie nimmt keinen Fopper mehr, macht kein Mittagsschläfchen mehr und geht schon alleine auf's WC. Und wenn sie guter Laune ist kann sie -- wenn sie will -- alleine essen und sich alleine anziehen. Das ist ja sehr willkommen, weil es somit weniger Arbeit für die Eltern gibt. Zu Ihren Hobbys gehören Malen, Puzzles und das anschauen von Kinderbüchern -- alles sehr ruhige Aktivitäten.

Aitor ist jetzt fast 1 ½ Jahre alt. Er ist ein Wirbelsturm, ich nenn ihn "Shiva den Zerstörer". Aitor hat nur schlimme Sachen im Kopf. Seine Lieblingsbeschäftigung ist es den Ofen, Herd, Waschmaschine, etc. einzuschalten, Dinge vom Tisch zu ziehen, Töpfe auf den Boden zu schmeißen und Bücher mit den Zähnen zu zerreißen. Nachdem er so ein Energiebündel ist kann man ihn keinen Moment aus den Augen lassen. Zur Kompensation hat er ein Lächeln, dass man ihm alles verzeihen muss. Er ist auch sehr neugierig und wenn man ihm etwas neues zeigt ist er mit voller Konzentration dabei. Er rennt wild im Haus herum und braucht viel Platz um sich auszutoben. Er dürfte einmal Bergsteiger werden, weil er auf alles hinauf muss. Er erklimmt Sessel, Tische, Leitern und sobald er eine Stiege erblickt ist er wie irr darauf versessen die Stiege hinaufzugehen, aber nicht nur einmal sondern 2 mal, 3 mal, 4 mal, etc. Im Herbst 2007 kommt er in den Kindergarten. Mal sehen, ob die Ihn bändigen können. Seine Hobbys sind rumlaufen, Höhen "erklimmen" und Lärm machen.

Über das Reisen:

Mit zwei Kindern ist es nicht so einfach spontan rumzureisen. Unsere "Ausflüge" kann man an einer Hand abzählen.

Zu Ostern waren wir in Guardamar del Seguro, einem kleinem Ort am Meer im Süden von Spanien. Zum Schwimmen ist es zwar im April auch noch zu kühl aber zumindest können die Kinder ein bisschen mit den Wellen spielen und Sandburgen bauen. Und Inma ist über jeden Tapetenwechsel froh. Und Spaziergänge den Strand entlang sind immer angenehm.

Im Sommer machten wir wieder einen Österreich Urlaub um die Familie zu besuchen.

Einen weiteren Kurzurlaub haben wir in Les Landes an der französischen Atlantikküste gemacht. Schon zum zweiten Mal. Es hat uns letztes Jahr gut gefallen und so sind wir wiederum hierher gekommen. Für eine Woche lebte die ganze Familie im Zelt und Campingbus. Es war heiß, fast zu heiß für die Strände. Schön waren immer die Mittagessen Picknicks in den schattigen und stillen Pinienwälder. Die Natur ist schön, und das Leben friedlich. Für Angela war ein Höhepunkt der Besuch eines Kinderbauernhofes wo Kinder den Zicklein und Bambis die Milchflasche geben dürfen.

Ein Wochenendausflug führte uns zu einem mittelalterlichem Fest auf die Burg Butroi. Sonst unternahmen wir auch noch öfters Tagesausflüge zu den nahe liegenden Stränden.

Im Dezember ging es in die Berge nach Argentinien. Mein Bruder Franz und ich bestiegen Aconcagua, den höchsten Berg außerhalb Asiens. Trotz seiner 6962m ist Aconcagua technisch ein einfacher Berg. Seine Schwierigkeit liegt im Wetter und der Logistik. Wir benötigten 15 Tage zur Besteigung, 5 Tage alleine für den Abstieg. Zu zweit hatten wir 90kg (25kg Essen, 5kg Kochbenzin, 60kg Ausrüstung wie Zelt, Schlafsack, etc.). Hin und zurück legten wir ca. 70km zurück. Gott-sei-Dank tragen einen Großteil der Strecke Maultiere das Gepäck. Am oberen Teil des Berges wird man dann selbst zum Lasttier und schleppt das Gepäck in 2 oder 3 Raten den Berg hinauf. Mit dem Wetter hatten wir sehr viel Glück. Nach wochenlangen Stürmen kam eine Schönwetterperiode gerade als wir bereit waren einen Gipfelsturm zu unternehmen. Der erste Gipfelsturmversuch wurde bei Sonnenschein zu einem Erfolg. Im gesamten verbrachten wir volle 3 Wochen in den Bergen und bewältigten 12,000 Höhenmeter.

Die Arbeit brachte mich nach Portugal und Dubai (Vereinigte Emirate von Arabien). Wie immer habe ich diese Aufenthalte auch ein wenig zum Tourismus benützt. In Dubai habe ich lecker gegessen (viel Indisch). Nachts habe ich mich im Meer in den Wellen gespielt. Das Meerwasser hat dort im Spätsommer unglaubliche 30 Grad. Tagsüber ist es bei 40 Grad zu heiß, mehr als eine Stunde ist es da am Strand nicht auszuhalten.

Über das Arbeiten:

Ich bin weiterhin selbständig und zuletzt hab ich ein zwei Monate in Dubai gearbeitet.

Resumen Anual

Aquí esta el resumen de los últimos 12 meses.

Sobre el amor y la vida:

Angela ahora tiene 3 años y medio. Es una buena niña. Es obediente, cariñosa y tranquila. Va a la guardería, toma clases de música y los fines de semana pinta con su papá. No tiene mucho talento en deportes, sin embargo encuentra la gimnasia entretenida. Poco a poco se hace una moza: ya no utiliza el chupete, no toma siesta y va al cuarto de baño sola. Cuando esta de buen humor puede -- si quiere -- comer sola y vestirse sola. Éso me alegra porque significa menos trabajo para mí. Sus pasatiempos incluyen la pintura, puzzles y mirar libros de niños -- todos actividades muy tranquilas.

Aitor ahora tiene casi 1 año y medio. Él es un terremoto; Le llamo "Shiva el destructor ". Aitor tiene con frecuencia pensamientos traviesos. Sus actividades favoritas son encender el horno, la estufa, la lavadora, tirar las cosas de la mesa, golpear con las cazuelas y romper los libros con sus dientes. Puesto que es un niño tan energético hay que vigilarle cada segundo. Para compensar sus actos traviesos tiene una sonrisa que te hace perdonar todo. También es muy curioso y si le enseñas algo nuevo presta toda su atención. Corre por el piso como loco y necesita mucho espacio para gastar su energía. Parece que un día será montañero: tiene la necesidad de subir cualquier cosa con que se cruza: sube las sillas, mesas y cuando ve una escalera no hay quien le pueda parar. Lucha con todo su alma para llegar hasta la escalera y después la sube, él solo, pero no una vez, muy a menudo dos veces, 3 veces, 4 veces, ... En otoño 2007 comenzará a ir a la guardería. A ver si son capaces de "domesticar" este niño salvaje. Sus pasatiempos son correr, subir cosas y hacer ruido.

Sobre viajar:

Con dos niños no es fácil viajar espontáneamente. Nuestras excursiones se pueden contar con los dedos de una mano. Pascua la pasamos en Guardamar del Segura, una ciudad pequeña en la costa en el sur de España. Hacia demasiado frío para nadar en abril, pero los niños podían jugar en la playa y hacer castillos de arena. A Inma siempre le gusta un cambio de aire y todos en la familia disfrutamos de las caminatas en la arena mojada en las playas.

En verano fuimos de nuevo a Austria a visitar la familia.

Otras vacaciones cortas las pasamos en Les Landes en la costa francesa. Ésta es ya nuestra segunda estancia allí. Disfrutamos de Las Landas tanto el año pasado que volvimos otra vez. Por una semana la familia entera vivimos en una tienda. Hacía calor, casi demasiado calor para las playas. Nuestros picnics diarios en los bosques de pino eran siempre un placer. La naturaleza es hermosa allí y la vida es pacífica. Lo mas fascinante para Angela era la visita a una granja para niños donde podía dar el biberón de leche a las cabritas y a los bambis.

Hemos hecho varias excursiones a las playas cercanas y a uno de los parques naturales no demasiado lejos de nuestro hogar.

En diciembre mi hermano Franz y yo fuimos a Argentina a pasar tiempo en las montañas. Subimos el Aconcagua, la montaña más alta fuera de Asia. A pesar de sus 6962 metros la montaña es técnicamente fácil. Sus dificultades son el tiempo y la logística. Necesitamos 10 días para subir y 5 días para descender. Los dos juntos llevábamos 90kg de material (25kg de comida, 5kg de combustible para cocinar, 60kg de equipo como la tienda, de sacos de dormir, etc.). Entre ida y vuelta anduvimos 70km. Menos mal que las mulas llevan la carga durante la parte más grande del viaje. Desde el campo base tuvimos que llevar todo el equipaje nosotros. Puesto que gente normal como yo no puede llevar 45kg subiendo una montaña, hay que llevarlo en 2 o 3 viajes. Lentamente nosotros y nuestro equipaje subíamos la montaña de campo a campo. Tuvimos mucha suerte con el tiempo. Después de semanas de tormentas pesadas el período del buen tiempo comenzó justo cuando estábamos listos para hacer el primer intento a la cumbre. En un día con sol en nuestro primer empuje a la cumbre llegamos a la meta. Pasamos 3 semanas en las montañas e hicimos un total de 12,000 m de subidas.

El trabajo me llevó a Portugal y a Dubai (los Emiratos Árabes). Combiné como siempre el trabajo con un poco de turismo. En Dubai disfruté de unas comidas deliciosas, sobre todo comida india. En la noche fui a la playa a jugar con las olas. La temperatura del agua del mar es de 30 grados, increíble. Durante el día con más de 40 grados no sobrevivo ni una hora en la playa. Pero durante la noche es un lujo estar nadando en el mar.

Sigo trabajando de autónomo y mi último contrato fue un trabajo de 2 meses en Dubai.
